Irregular was the first project in which I photographed the interior of a home. For two years, I walked the streets of the Nueva Esperanza settlement while working on Tijuana compressed (Tijuana Comprimida). Over time, my relationship with the community deepened, and photographing the interiors of their homes became a natural extension of this connection.
In this project, I moved away from the exteriors, evenly illuminated by sunlight, to explore interiors imbued with atmospheres shaped by each space’s unique light. These interiors are composed of layered elements, assemblages or collages of materials and objects that transcend their original purpose. Through small acts of faith and silent determination, these elements quietly meet essential needs.
The images aim to capture these intimate gestures—the ways in which we imbue objects with meaning, transforming them into extensions of a space of protection, a refuge from danger, risk, and solitude. Each photograph reflects the silent effort to shape a space, imbuing the environment with a profound sense of meaning and belonging.
